10 Ways to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

  • Social Security Number is the key to your identity.  Never give it out over the phone, internet, mail or in person unless you have initiated the contact. (No matter who they claim to be.)

  • Have your mail sent to a Post Office Box.

  • Buy a home shredder, shred all paperwork, old checks, pre-approved credit, etc.

  • Cancel all credit cards you have not used in the past 6 months.

  • Avoid opening “Instant Credit” accounts at local stores.

  • Never leave a purse in your vehicle or a shopping buggy, no matter how well hidden.

  • Keep Social Security Cards at home and not in your wallet.

  • Have your SSN removed from your driver’s license and leave your phone number, DOB, SSN, Driver License Number off of your checks.

  • Run credit check on yourself every 6 months.

and your local police.
